Most of The Posh Cockneys grew out of Samantha interviewing both her parents separately, on different continents. They cannot be anywhere near each other. She wanted a memoir, not an incident number.
Hours and hours of storytelling were recorded, transcribed and turned into the book, alongside Samantha’s own memories. Her mother had a version. Her father had a version. Samantha had follow-up questions. That last part was rarely popular.
There were tears. There were laughs. There were lots of bottles of wine. Some evenings the corks came out more easily than the truth. Others, a joke opened a door that nobody had touched for years.
At the heart of it is a daughter trying to understand the people who raised her: the glamour, the damage, the nerve, and the love that survived the lot. Two parents. Several time zones. One very long transcription. The wine deserves a mention in the acknowledgements.
